Steven was good in school, but it's something of a mystery that he succeeded at all. He used to spend tons of time with A Capella and Chorale. He had a paper route after school. He dated plenty. He was always building something with Dirk, like their giant PVC pipe raft. He was off composing songs with N Stetich. And on weekends, he was doing the yard work for three different widows in the ward. He always acted like doing homework was a luxury that he couldn't afford until after midnight--excepting Saturday evenings, of course.
He took a summer trip to Europe and was completely cheerful about eating oatmeal every day and sleeping in trains every night for a month. Only after the trip did his true opinion come out: "It didn't matter what city we went to, we knew what we'd see: Castles, Cathedrals and Museums. Sheesh! It got old." His favorite times were eating lunch with a Danish family after church, fish 'n chips with Dirk's uncle in Derby, and entertaining the Herbers in Hamburg. For Steven, the history of the Old World couldn't hold a candle to making someone smile.
